DMCA takedown notice generator
Your content turned up on a leak site. Fill in where it is and where yours was published, and you get a takedown notice that contains every element US copyright law asks for, ready to send.
Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us or stored. This is a template, not legal advice.
What a valid notice has to contain
A takedown notice under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act needs six things, listed in 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3): a signature of the owner or someone authorised to act for them, identification of the original work, the infringing material and where to find it, your contact details, a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised, and a statement under penalty of perjury that the notice is accurate and you are authorised to send it. The generator puts all six in, in that order.
Where to send it
- The site itself. Look for a “DMCA”, “Copyright” or “Abuse” link, usually in the footer. That address is where the notice goes first.
- The host. If the site ignores you, its hosting provider usually will not. A WHOIS or hosting lookup for the domain shows who hosts it, and most hosts publish an abuse address.
- Google. Even before a page is gone, you can ask Google to remove it from search results through its legal removal form. That cuts off most of the traffic a leak page gets.
Protect your privacy when you send it
A notice goes to the site you are complaining about, and it can travel further: Google, for example, says it may forward notices to the Lumen database, which publishes them after removing certain personal information. Use a business name, a business email and a business or agent address where you can, rather than your home address.
Before sending, save the infringing pages with the URL and date visible. Pages disappear, and evidence gathered afterwards is worth much less. Our step-by-step guide to what to do when your content is leaked covers the order of operations.
When this becomes a job of its own
One notice is easy. The work is the tail: mirrors that copy from the first site, and the source that keeps feeding them. If you want to see how big the problem is first, the free leak check searches the common sites for your handle. On accounts we manage, monitoring and takedowns are part of leak protection.
Common questions
Is this DMCA notice generator free?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser, needs no account, and nothing you type is sent to us or stored.
Does a DMCA notice work on sites outside the US?
Many sites and hosting providers outside the US still act on DMCA notices, and Google takes removal requests for its search results. A site that ignores you can often be reached through its host instead.
Do I have to use my real name?
The notice must come from the owner or someone authorised to act for them, and it has to be accurate. A registered business name or an agent acting for you are common ways to keep your personal name out of it.
Is this legal advice?
No. It is a template built from the elements the statute lists. If a site disputes your notice or files a counter-notice, talk to a lawyer.
